The Cornish Tre, Pol and Pen saying

The Trevanion in Australia.  Although she was registered in London her name points to a Cornish connection...

"'By Tre, and Pol and Pen,
You shall know the Cornish Men'

These three names are the Dictionary of such surnames that are originally Cornish; and though Nouns in sence I may fitly term them propositions.

1. Tre signifies a Town, Hence Tre-fry, Tre-laveney, Tre-Vanion &c.

2. Pol signifies an Head, Hence Pol-wheel.

3. Pen signifies a Top, Hence Pentire, Pen-rose, Pen-kevil &c."

Ray 1768

A compleat collection of English proverbs; also the most celebrated proverbs of the Scotch, Italian, French, Spanish, and other languages. ... By ... ... is added, (written by the same author) ed 4

[I am uncertain if Ray is referring to surnames or to places here - many are both.  Given the context I think they are surnames]
