"Turning left through the square [from the church] a picturesque archway, known as Cromwell's Arch, will be seen at the end of the street. The architecture is perpendicular, so it must have been there long before Cromwell's time: and I know of no tradition to connect it to the Roundhead occupation of Bovey, though the town witnessed some skirmishes during the Civil War."
