"Westward of this is the Ashburton and Chagford road, by the side of which is Jay's Grave. Jay was a young woman who, many years ago, hanged herself at Cannon Farm, and it is said was buried here in a suicide's grave."

Map - Jay's Grave
I presume this is Kitty Jay? The strange legend that she was with child from a neighbouring village whom she was forbidden to go near. After the village knew of her baby and whence it came from, she hung herself, but because of the crime she committed, she was to be buried at a cross-roads where her soul would forever wonder restless and confused. Also to point out, some years ago Channel 4 went down their to film the mysterious goings on. A fresh bunch of flowers is always placed by the grave every morning. The film crew tried to film this strange event, but their equipment failed to work. Still to this day no one knows who does this.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is Kitty Jay. I had not heard about the out of bounds village before. I also didn't know Channel 4 had documented it! Fantastic! I have witnessed fresh flowers there almost every time I have been - some times in winter it is only plastic flowers, but in the height of tourist season there can be up to 6 or 7 separate bunches of fresh cut flowers.
ReplyDeleteI have also read about some people going there at night and having some very spooky experience with a sudden Dartmoor mist...
One of the flowers has occasionally been simple gorse or heather... Piskies??
