Somerset proverbs include those attributed to a "Mr. Andrew Paschall; of Chedsey in Somersetshire" - I am not sure where Chedsey is, though it could be an old name for Chedzoy near Bridgewater...

Sarah Hewett 1900 DONE!

All the folklore I could cull from Sarah Hewett's Nummits and Crummits is now uploaded, maped, keyworded and illustrated!

There was a number of anecdotes that I have not included because they seemed too mundain and seem never to have entered the oral tradition at any point. I also excluded some folk songs for reasons I debated before...

Where should I go now? What book (out of copy-right) or area (in the West Country) should I explore? Any suggestions?]

4 books now entirely done...

About half way through I found out that this book does have a date! It is 1893.  However as I had already posted so many posts I stuck to "(undated)" as the date.

I found this volume on a table at a church fete in Beecroft when I was around 14 years old. It was scanned from the original volume, converted to text, corrected and converted into a website over a long period from 1999 to 2004. The work was begun on a Powermac 8100 and finished on a generic PC running Red Hat Linux. I would like to dedicate this work to the memory of my father Neill Spong, who never went to England, had no interest in English history, but who loved old books and respected hard work and perseverence.

Help finding old books

Dose any one know of any other out of copyright / Copy left texts about the folklore of the Westcountry that I have not already listed on the bar to the right?   

If you do please leave a reference under the comments section on this post. 

I still have a long way to go before I have worked all the way through these, but it would still be good to have them for others to reference.

Thanks for taking the time to read the blog - It will continue to get better over time.

The 'search' is still not that brilliant, but the tags are at the bottom of the screen if you want to find all about the Westcountry folklore of one thing (e.g. 'Trees').

My Grandparents at Tavistock

Cresswell 1921 finished!

Hooray!  All the folkloricly related text from a second book has been fully transcribed!

Surrounded by torn up bits of paper that where book marks. Phew!

Getting Hunts' Romances of the West of England done is a long term goal, but for the moment I will attempt to tidy up a few lose ends, such as Hope's Holy wells (Cornwall is all I have left to do there - the biggest entry of them all, of course.)

Our baby is not sleeping much at the moment, and I am going alternate with my wife all night, so I may not manage more than a Holy Well a day.

Oh well, at least Cresswell 1921 is now officially finished! My favorite thing she mentioned was the Horse pick-me-up...
